I am so proud of how the kids responded today. We came off a really poor performance vs Milan. Lack of efficiency in the line up, and poor defensive play. We cleaned some things up at practice, focused on simplifying the game, and executing routine plays. I think they came together and did the simple things much better today. Kuzara stepped up in the circle, I dont think she had one walk. That has been a huge piece of the pie. We cant afford giving up free bases. The defense came up strong behind her. A natural double play to end the 5th was a huge play by our middle infield. Russo behind the plate came up with a huge play to throw a girl out at third on a ball in the dirt. All around, we looked like we found our bearings. I am extremely happy with how they stepped up, today.
It came down to the wire on Monday, as Huron Varsity Chiefs grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 4-3, over Flat Rock Varsity Rams. The game was tied at three in the bottom of the seventh when Kuzara on one out hit a shot to right center field pushing it into a triple. Ramsby doubled, on the first pitch scoring one run. Ending the game.
Huron Varsity Chiefs opened the scoring in the second after Martindale doubled, scoring one run.
A passed ball extended the Huron Varsity Chiefs lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
Giroux homered to left field, which helped Flat Rock Varsity Rams tie the game at three in the top of the sixth.
Kuzara started the game for Huron Varsity Chiefs. The starter surrendered six hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking one. Neace started in the circle for Flat Rock Varsity Rams. The right-handed pitcher allowed five hits and four runs (three earned) over six and one-third innings, striking out two and walking five.
Ramsby and Kuzara were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Huron Varsity Chiefs. Martindale, Ramsby, and Kuzara each drove in one run for Huron Varsity Chiefs. Robbins paced Huron Varsity Chiefs with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, tallying five walks for the game. Huron Varsity Chiefs turned two double plays in the game.
Giroux provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Flat Rock Varsity Ramswith two runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Giroux stole two bases.
